From Bowral, we headed to Coogee – a beach town south of Sydney. Traffic increased to ‘zany’, and we were happy to find a hotel near the sea. It was definitely a time for a walk on the sand followed by dinner. The next morning, we drove north to Dee Why where Eric’s niece’s family lives by the beach. Daniel has just started kindergarten – and new school uniforms and much excitement were all around.
Friday it was back to Sydney…to return the car and to have an all day explore. Australia in many areas needs rain badly – and Sydney ‘had chosen’ Friday for its rainy day. It did not daunty us – although we had to stop for umbrellas.
After leaving the car near Kings Cross, we set out to the Anzac Memorial, the Botanical Gardens, and the Art Gallery It was fun to see works by artists we had ‘met’ in Canberra . Ab ‘indoor’ picnic and coffee followed an explore at the Australia Museum. There, an exhibit shed light on how animals, insects and fish have adapted to the harsh Australia climate. Examples of the deadly fish and snakes were enough for me.
In late afternoon, we headed up to the Shangri La Hotel. Its top floor bistro was a super setting for a glass of beer and a 360 view of the city. Rush hour traffic and zipping trains did not look at all tempting to the ‘retired’.
Next stop was a Captain Cook’s dinner cruise. – band music, a splendid meal and a gorgeous, ever changing scene. The sun set as city lights encircled us, and we had a wonderful evening.
Today, it’s time to visit with Basil and Daniel before joining Luke Collard and his family and mom in Manly. Monday, I head north and leave behind a wonderful, magical time Down Under. Eric will follow in two weeks after additional time with family.
In so many ways Down Under is always very close to us...and yet often the miles get in the way.
